Christ our Morning Star: 4-day Guided Retreat (3-8 Jul)
This retreat will draw on some of the beautiful paintings by the priest and artist Sieger Köder as invitation to prayer. Köder, who died in 2014, produced many meditative images that show Christ as a light at the centre of our lives, dispelling fear. Magdalen’s book Christ our Morning Star: The Art and Inspiration of Sieger Köder opens with one of the artist’s most beautiful images of creation in which Christ is seen as the fullness of God’s creation.
‘By his death and resurrection (Christ) acts as a model and Saviour for us all” Magdalen says, “Sieger Köder uses images from Scripture and daily life to show that we can find God in everything – if only we have eyes to see.”
Magdalen Lawler and Tom McGuinness have worked together over many years to offer retreats weaving together, scripture, art, poetry and song. Some of Tom’s reflective song-poems from the book will help to create a quiet atmosphere of peacefulness and prayer in this retreat.
Writing of the book, Nicholas King SJ, author and New Testament scholar remarks, “This is a stunning piece of work. The extraordinary colours of the palette of Fr Sieger Köder as he contemplates the mysteries of Scripture are brilliantly enhanced by the sensitive text of Sr Magdalen Lawler. In a world that is starting to rediscover how much it stands in need of God, this work will be just the thing for those who are looking for the mystery that lies at the heart of life and at the heart of humanity. The poems of Fr Tom McGuinness make an excellent counterpoint and are subtly displayed. This book should be attentively read, and its pages contemplated in rapt silence.”
