The prophets of the Old Testament are key to our understanding of the Gospels and to the living of our Christian faith. The Books of Isaiah and Jeremiah, in particular, feature prominently in the Christian liturgy year by year, but many of the other prophets - among them Amos, Hosea and Ezechiel - also figure in our liturgical celebrations. The evocative poetry of Isaiah, in particular, is prominent in the Scripture readings we here during Advent and Christmas, Lent and Holy Week.
These prophets, through their "words of fire" and sometimes through the drama of their lives as well, spoke boldly and passionately to the people of their day about the opportunities and challenges facing them on their journey of life. But they are not merely striking figures from ancient history. As we grapple with the contemporary challenges posed for the living faith, the prophets can speak to us today with the same directness and urgency as they did in the past, calling us again to lives of faith , integrity and trust in God. Above all, they point us to the living person of Jesus.
In a series of talks in April and May this year, Fr. Dermot Mansfield, S.J., will outline the lives and teachings of the prophets, situating them in their historical context, and showing how they can enrich our own faith lives today.
